Fish Report - 16th May 2013

Thu, 16/05/2013 - 10:15 -- Admin

We saw a week of reasonable weather this week around the Bundaberg area, with better than average light winds and this finally gave an opportunity to allow plenty of boats offshore. Although the tides were big there was still some quality fish caught.

The shelf produced some jobfish, pearl perch and some big snapper. Place like Warregoes produced some good coral trout and sweetlip. The Five-Degree Patch and the Northern and Southern Gutters produced some big red jew, trout and grass sweetlip.

Well, both the offshore and the estuary fishing around the Bundaberg area is well and truly on the improve.

This week though, the offshore weather was ordinary so no one really fished out wide. Most offshore fishing was coastal, with plenty of mackerel and tuna being caught right along the coast by spinning or trolling lures.

Wow, what a week of great weather we have had in the Bundaberg area! It has been some of the best/calmest we have seen, and a lot of big boats took advantage of the opportunity.

Some of the bigger boats fished wide, out to the shelf catching big reds, job fish, pearl perch and cod. The islands and reefs are producing coral trout, red throat sweeties, parrot and hussar. Even the gutters produced some big trout, cod and grass sweeties.

Since the recent flood here in Bundaberg, the fishing has been a bit slow in some of our estuary systems. In our region, the Burnett, Kolan and Elliott Rivers as well as Baffle Creek were all affected in some way.

However, all is not lost. After a while the systems start to clean up and the fish return. After all the rain we had, the prawns are now showing up and they are in good numbers. If you use the wash of your boat right along the banks of the rivers and creeks, you can usually see where they are. It should be a good season for them.

What incredible weather we’ve had over the past month or so! But, it’s not all doom and gloom – there are fish to be had in the estuary systems and local knowledge sure pays off.

With all the wind and rain that we’ve had, it has dramatically changed a lot of areas that we fish. Be aware that new structures which will hold fish may be present under the water.

Fish Report - 21st February 2013

The fishing in the Bundaberg area has been very limited of late due to the unpredictable weather patterns at the moment. This means that offshore fishing has been put on hold due to wind.

Even if the weather did come good you would be mad to head out the front for fear of hitting an object which had been swept out in the recent floods, and is sitting on or just under the surface.

The Burnett River has a lot of fresh – amongst other things – running down it and is still very dirty.

Fish Report - 24th January 2013

Last weekend saw a break in the weather and a lot of boats headed offshore. With perfect tides most were well rewarded with the islands producing reds, trout and big redthroat sweetlip.

The Warregoes produced trout, parrot and hussar. The Gutters turned it on as well with some monster trout on livies and parrot and sweetlip all being caught.

There has been a small run of small spanish mackerel on most of the areas mentioned above by trolling large baits such as slimeys and bonito.

The fishing around the Bundaberg area is still red-hot with most northern species all being caught, and I can say I’ve never seen or had the fishing this good!

All the rivers and creeks are producing great numbers of large threadfin salmon, mangrove jacks, jew, cod, fingermark and still some monster grunter. We have been catching most of these species on lures and the standout lures have been Jackall Squirrels and Tranzams, all worked slow with a long pause.

Fish Report - 10th January 2013

There was a small window of opportunity to head offshore from Bundaberg this week, and a few anglers did manage to catch a few fish, including trout, sweetlip and hussar. Some spanish mackerel were also caught, on big live baits and lures.

The coast has seen a run of schoolies. Trolling spoons seems to be the go.

The local rivers and creeks are still fishing well, with a lot of flathead being caught along the sand bars and drop-offs. The new Atomic Prong seems to be a favoured plastic for the flatties at the moment.
