Now that the first of the two Coral Reef Fin Fish closures has ended, and the weather forecast for the weekend is shaping up to be quite good, this will allow the boaties to head offshore. The reefies should be on the chew, so get out wide with fresh strips of baits to entice them to bite.
It's a good time to be throwing a lure out for the mackeral as well. As few good spanish are starting to show around the higher parts of the reefs. Look for those higher points - spanish like to hover there waiting for stray baitfish. A well-trolled deep diving lure should get them to strike... and hang on!!
If the wind does get up a bit try some estuary fishing in areas such as Baffle Creek and the Kolan River systems. Look to your run-in tide on the shallow sand flats with a good soft plastic of your choice to lure the flathead.
The Burnett River has also been producing good king salmon and jewies on live bait still. Good flathead on a slow troll with a deep diving lure has been working well. Try trolling near structure for the bigger fish.
Lake Monduran is certainly worth a look for a barra now with the water temperature warming up. Look for those snaggy areas to drop in and place a nice suspending lure at them. Don't forget - on the 19th and 20th of this month is the Monduran Family Fishing Classic. A great weekend for all the family to get out, have a fish for the mighty barramundi and generally have a good time. There are stacks of lucky draw prizes, not only for the adults, but the kids as well, and you don't even have to catch a fish to win.
Happy fishing,
Brett Robinson.
