on orders over $125It’s great to see that over the past fortnight the Bundaberg region has received some welcome rainfall, topping up the rainwater tanks and dams, helping our local farmers and giving them a great start for this year’s cane season.
The rain has also been good for crabbing with some quality bucks being caught in the estuaries around Bundaberg.
As well as crabs, the Burnett has been fishing very well. Mangrove jack are the species most people are targeting this time of year, and there have been a few massive jack caught recently. Using live bait, both sprat and poddy mullet has been the two stand-outs, but strips of mullet fillets presented well have also been very effective.
Lure fishermen have not been disappointed as well. There are many types of lures out there that work well. We recommend using a soft plastic or hard body lure around 100mm in length fished around the many rock walls in the Burnett. Trolling hard body lures along these rock walls is an easy method to catch a variety of species including estuary cod, flathead, bream and mangrove jack. There have been some good reports of a few prawns showing up after the rain, so hopefully a lot of people can get out and secure a nice feed leading up to Christmas.
The Kolan has been a river system well worth a go. It’s also picked up with the crabbing and prawning. The fishing has been a little patchy but the fish being caught are good quality - mangrove jack and flathead being two of the most popular species caught in the past two weeks. With the barra closure on until 1st February, any barra caught while chasing jewies and jack must be released as quickly and easily as possible.
On the fresh water scene, Lake Gregory is an excellent place to lure fish for Australia bass. These fish are very aggressive and will bite most styles of lures at one time or another. A mate and I fished the dam last Sunday afternoon and we landed quite a few bass around the edges and the timber at the back of one bay. Lightly weighted soft plastics and spinnerbaits do the damage. That afternoon and once the sun had sunk behind the horizon we caught a couple of bass on the surface. Small poppers were getting smashed off the top and we both had a good session that afternoon.
