Fish Report - 1st July 2010

Well, we have had a good run of weather in the local Bundaberg area over the past week or so, and this made for a very successful weekend for the VMR Family Fishing Classic which was held at Burnett Heads.

Some excellent fish were caught in the local rivers and offshore, with the Sunday being the better day. A lot of boats headed out wide and some big fish were landed, including big red emperor to 14.5kgs, big cobia, snapper and big coral trout. Good numbers of spanish mackerel, parrot and other mixed reefies were also caught. The good fishing weather was great for the competition.

The Burnett River produced some excellent fish with some of the best quality river fish we have seen in a long while. These included some of the biggest whiting and bream along with some great flathead. Some of the deeper holes in the river produced some beautiful salmon, both blue and king, mainly caught on live baits and Blade lures. Some good sized grunter and tailor were also taken.

The fishing on the reefs and in the rivers has been some of the best fishing we have seen in a long while which means that our summer fishing season should be a big one.

Congratulations to VMR Bundaberg for running a fantastic competition. This year they had a record number of entries and it was a great weekend for all the family, with lots of lucky draws for both seniors and juniors. We look forward to next year’s event.

Till next time,
