Finally the anglers in the Bundaberg area had a chance to use the boats and head offshore and chase some pelagics and reef fish.
Last weekend Saturday was good, but Sunday was superb. There were reports of good spanish being taken up at the Western Warregoes and the Althea. Plenty of reef fish were on the chew as well. It had been a long time between reef trips and quite a few people got a good feed of fish. If you wanted tuna on Sunday, you could have thrown anything at them. Longtails, small yellowfin and the southern blue were all about smashing baitfish on the surface. Great fighting fish, excellent smoked in small portions.
The Kolan River is starting to fire with the system now clearing up. Mangrove jack are being taken on a variety of lures and live baits. There have been good catches of whiting off the sand banks up near the Miara area on an incoming tide. Look for good drop-off areas to target a prize flathead. Always good to take a couple of photos and release the big girls as they are breeding and full of eggs.
Just a friendly reminder about the barrage in the Kolan River – you cannot fish within 400 metres downstream or 200 metres upstream of the barrage. There are signs in place to let people know about the exclusion zones, and you never know when Fisheries will be watching. There are plenty of barra in other areas of the Kolan to target.
The Elliott River has cleaned up extremely well after the amount of water we’ve had. Small craft were everywhere on the river just enjoying the day. This is an excellent system to go crabbing and to get some prawns when they are on. Also, you can almost be guaranteed a feed of good whiting and flathead as well. Bream are starting to show up in the Elliott, and they are great fighting fish on light gear. Bream will take a variety of baits. Live baiting is excellent choice to get bigger bream, and the bigger flathead just love a whole live poddy mullet.
The freshwater scene has been a bit quiet of late. There is a round of the Australian Bass Tournament Bass Electric Series at the Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) on the weekend. This is a major event that really gets the boys fired up to catch that elusive bass. They are great fun on light gear.
As far as fishing goes for this weekend, you’d be best to stick to the estuaries as it looks as though the wind will be hanging around again. Really try and get some live baits for mangrove jack or big flathead – that should be the trick.
Good luck and happy fishing,
Brett Robinson
