Well, the fishing has been great lately with a good list of species being caught in the local rivers around Bundaberg as well as offshore.
The rivers have produces some top class fish with some excellent bream being caught around the rocks. The sand flats are producing some top flathead fishing with best results coming from using soft plastics by fishing with 3” to 4” plastics rigged on 1/8th size jig heads. Some of the flathead have been over-sized, so please remember their maximum size of 75cm.
There has been a small run of grunter and salmon still moving about. Live prawns are the gun bait for these.
A few of the summer species have moved back up the Burnett River already and some of these include cod, jack, fingermark and an odd barra. There is also still a sprinkling of prawns running up and down the river.
The offshore fishing has also been great. The gutters have been producing some good trout, parrot and sweetlip. On the outer reefs there have been big reds, snapper, trout, parrot. Some big pelagics have been caught on the reefs as well, with big cobia and spanish mackerel both being taken.
The coastline is producing some good school mackerel, and trolling spoons is the preferred method.
The bass are a bit slow in Lake Gregory, but those that have been caught have been crackers. Fifty centimetre fish have not been uncommon with Jackalls and Spinnerbaits being the proven lures.
Monduran should turn on some big barra as the warm northerly winds heat up the water. The backs of most of the bays are the spots to check out. Trolling around in the main basin has also produced some good barra with bright deep diving lures being a hot favourite.
Till next time,
