Well, we hope you enjoyed your Christmas break and that Santa brought you all plenty of toys to take out on your next fishing adventure.
THE BURNETT RIVER
As for the fishing, well you couldn’t get much better, especially the Burnett River. The river mouth on the high tides has produced a few school mackerel by float-lining pilchards or trolling small hard body lures mainly in chrome colours.
Most of the rock walls are still holding good numbers of big bream and cod. Most of the cod have been caught by trolling the rock walls. Trolling the walls should see you using a quality 30lb outfit, 60lb leader and lures such as the Halco Scorpion 125mm in 5mtr, and 20+ Barra Classics, then hang on as the cod do belt these lures hard.
There are plenty of other species about, including some great flathead, grunter and some elbow-slapper whiting. Prawns have been hit and miss but when you find them it’s well worth your efforts. Mud crabs were excellent on the last big tides with some boats recording up to fifteen crabs over a couple of lifts, so fingers crossed the run of crabs continues.
BAFFLE CREEK AND KOLAN RIVER
Both of these systems are fishing well also with some good numbers of quality jacks being caught. Jack to 60cm have been reported with a mix being caught on lure and live baits. Most of the jacks have been caught around the rocky areas, so remember this the next time you head up. Again, there is plenty of whiting and flathead on the sand flats and a few queenfish and trevally around the mouths. Both the Baffle and the Kolan have been producing a few mud crabs and should be worth your efforts.
ELLIOTT RIVER
There is plenty of nice sized dart and whiting out around the mouth and out onto the beach. The run-in tide using either yabbies or beach worms has been the way to score a feed. There is plenty of flathead on the sand bars as you head upstream and a few nice jacks and cod on the rocks and snags further up the creek. It might also be worth chucking in the crab pots as a few have been reported out of this system also.
LAKE GREGORY
There has been some lovely bass caught out of the lake this week, with a few at almost 50cm. These have come from the weed edges early morning on surface poppers. There are a few smaller bass schooled up towards the middle of the lake and most of these have been caught on small blades and soft plastics.
LAKE MONDURAN
Well, the Bundaberg Toyota Golden Barra hasn’t yet been caught, so now’s your chance as the lake is fishing really well. Barra to 80cam have been common and up to ten barra per session have been reported. Bigger lures have started to work better in this warmer weather with the Strada Tera 125 being a true stand-out barra lure.
The Golden Barra competition continues up until 31st January, 2019. If you’d like to have a go at the $15,000 Golden Barra, entry is free and you will need to jump onto https://www.goldenbarra.com.au/ to register. Till next time
