on orders over $125Although the weather was a bit windy, there was no rain to dampen the spirits of the kids taking part in the annual Take a Kid Fishing Day held at the river mouth at Elliot Heads on Sunday, 3rd April 2011.
This day is held every year and is sponsored by Sunfish, the Department of Primary Industries, the Australian Fishing Trade Association and Tackle World Bundaberg.
The day is aimed at children up to fifteen years old, to get them involved with fishing and educate them in responsible fishing practices. Fishing specialists are on hand to help them with their fishing techniques, so the children and their parents can come along and have a fun day together, with a positive outcome.
Tackle World staff were there on the day to lend a hand with the fishing, and to help any of the kids who needed to be shown how to rig up their tackle, as well to man the sausage sizzle and to present the awards and lucky draws.
This year 39 children came along with their parents and tried their luck. Most of the kids managed to land a fish or two, including dart, whiting and even a couple of crabs.
The first fish of the day was caught by little Jake Harris who hooked a 35cm dart, and won himself a rod and reel combo. This was also the biggest fish of the day. Jackson Finnis landed some dart and whiting, with his biggest whiting being 29cm. For his efforts, he was also rewarded with a rod and reel. The third rod and reel combo went to Grace Sparrow-Ackling who reeled in fish for the whole morning and had a ball doing it.
With the high tide dropping, the fishing took place between 9.00am and around 11.00am, and when the kids were all fished out they grabbed a sausage and collected their awards. Each kid who took part was presented with a sample bag supplied by Sunfish, and a prize pack donated by Tackle World Bundaberg.
This year’s Take a Kid Fishing Day was a great success with all the kids and their parents spending a morning on the beach having a fun time together. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
