The windy weather lately has not been the best for anglers, and anyone who wants to toss in a line has been confined to the rivers once more.
The most prevalent species caught this week has been summer whiting. The Burnett River has produced some good quantities of this fish and the quality has been top class. Drifting the shallow sand bars with either yabbies or worms lightly weighted to hold the bottom has produced the best results. Those who are eager to wade the sands flats have been catching good numbers of whiting, also on small surface popper lures. If you're targeting this species, don't forget that the new bag limits apply to whiting. This is now a combined bag limit of 30 of all whiting species, except winter whiting, which has a bag limit of 50.
Anglers who have been fishing the flats have also managed to catch a good number of flathead, mainly by throwing soft plastics or small lures. There is also a new size limit on flathead. The most common, the dusky flathead has a minimum size of 40cm, and now a maximum of 75cm, with a bag limit of 5.
The river mouths have been producing some great catches of school mackeral and some good chopper tailor. Trolling small Flasha lures and small deep diving Minnows to 10 feet, preferably blue in colour has been the most productive method.
For those who have managed to get out the front, some of the shallow inshore reefs have been producing good catches of mackeral and cobia, and also some good bottom fish such as sweetlip, and some early season snapper. Some of the snapper have been reported to 6.5kg. They have been caught on bait, such as pilchards and yakkas, as well as soft plastics.
Monduran has been fishing pretty tough lately, but those anglers who have been putting in the hours have managed to land a few barra. Most of these fish have been caught on soft plastics.
Bass still seem to be on the chew at Lake Gregory (Isis Impoundment), taking small metal blades being fished in the deep during the day and along the weed beds in the early morning and late afternoon.
So, with the weather forecast not looking too flash, the rivers and estuaries might be the go for this weekend. Don't forget your crab pots - with the full moon this could be the best option to bag a feed.
