For the first Christmas in a long time the Bundaberg region has experienced great weather and by all reports, quite a few offshore boats made the most of the calm conditions.
The reef fishing has been great with most boats securing a good feed of reef fish. Loads of hussar, grass sweetlip, mackeral and cod have been filling the ice boxes, as well as some big red emperor up to 12kg, but also lots have been just under-size. Most boats reported that sharks have been a problem with lots of nice fish lost.
The Burnett River continues to fish well this summer and anglers have been catching mangrove jack, salmon, flathead, big grunter and lots of good quality estuary cod. Both bait and lure fishermen have been having some top sessions during the Christmas holidays. Mud crabs seem to be on the move after the rain, so it’s worth putting in a few pots.
Around the mouth of the Burnett schools of mac tuna, trevally, mackeral and queenfish have been caught trolling lures as well by casting metal slugs and retrieving at high speed.
Lake Gregory has slowed a little. The dam seems to be going through a change. The weed is dying and the bass seem to have shut down. Anglers putting in a little effort are still catching quality bass on blades and tail spinners.
Lake Monduran is starting to really fire up with the barra averaging close to 90cm. They are becoming a challenging fish to land once hooked. Your gear, knots and hardware on your lures needs to be top notch to land these big fish. Early morning and late afternoons are the prime time to target barra using suspending hard body lures and soft plastics. Let’s hope the coming barra season from noon on the 1st of February will be as good as it was through to May last year.
