on orders over $125January is usually a great time to explore the waterways around the Bundaberg region. With light winds expected this weekend, it looks like it will be a great chance to get out and wet a line.
The Burnett River is once again alive with small prawns and bait fish. Prawning is really starting to fire up and hopefully, over the next couple of weeks the size of the prawns should improve. Rubyanna Creek has been one of the hot spots with most guys catching a good feed.
Fishing in the Burnett continues to produce the goods. There have been good reports of decent grunter, flathead and threadfin salmon, and some nice bream have been active during the past week. It’s also been one of the best fingermark and mangrove jack seasons we can remember. Fish to 60cm have been taken at night. Using large prawns, sprat or poddy mullet for bait have all been very successful lately.
The Baffle has been very productive recently. The better-sized prawns have been plentiful throughout this system. Reports are that a few nice muddies are being caught after the small flow of fresh we had a few weeks ago. Mangrove jack, bream and flathead have all been on the bite so it might be worth a drive this weekend.
The Kolan River also is loaded with lots of small prawns. Over the past week holiday-makers staying at the Miara Caravan Park have had success off the beach right in front of the caravan park. Big grunter, whiting and flathead have been keeping the kids amused during the school holidays.
The Elliott River has also been the place for big whiting. Some anglers have been using small poppers on light gear and are having a ball chasing whiting to 42cm in the shallows. Some big flathead have also been caught around the mouth and a few jack are still smashing lures further upstream.
Offshore, some nice snapper and grunter caught on the close reefs early, with mackeral still being caught on all the popular marks.
Lake Gregory and Lake Monduran should be fishing better than they are, with only a few fish being hooked recently. Hopefully the action in both these dams will improve over the coming weeks.
