Fish Report - 22nd January 2015

The fishing in the Bundaberg area continues to produce the goods over the past week. The rain that we’ve experienced recently has stirred up the prawns and crabs in the Burnett, so it is well worth putting in the effort to secure a top feed. Some good reports of big Thread Fin Salmon back in the river that have been taking live prawns and mullet strips. Mangrove Jack are still very active near most of the rock bars. This popular fish can be targeted using many different techniques including live and dead baits as well as on hard and soft plastic lures either trolled or cast to the structure. Jacks to 60cm have been caught lately so make sure your gear is up to the task. 20lb braid and 30-40lb leader is a good starting point. The Kolan river is also fishing well with Mangrove Jack, nice Grunter, Flathead and quality Whiting all being caught in the past week. The prawns have got better in size and seem to be all through the river. Lake Monduran and Awoonga Dam are starting to produce some nice Barramundi. I’ve heard of a few barra to 94cm caught in Monduran last week in the late afternoons on Jackall Squirrels. Tackle World staff members, Shane and I fished Lake Awoonga last weekend in the Basstastic comp and landed some nice barra to 83cm, so hopefully the barra action only improves over the coming months.
