on orders over $125Luckily enough the Bundaberg area had only minimal damage and was not badly affected by Cyclone Marcia as she passed about 200 klms inland around Monto last Friday.
The Burnett River has seen its levels rise on Monday and Tuesday but remained under minor flood level. The river is open to public use again but it might take some time for the water to clean up and the amount of debris to settle. One of the benefits of a minor flood is that the river almost always comes back fishing better than ever.
Anyone looking to go fishing this weekend should try the Elliott River. This system still has clear water and is fishing very well for big whiting and flathead around the sand bars, and also for a few prawns and mangrove jack further upstream. Fresh sand worms and yabbies are what’s been the best baits for the whiting. Another option is to try casting small poppers and stick bait over the shallows. This method is very visual and can be extremely productive on the bigger whiting and flathead.
Further offshore from the Elliott River, Bundaberg Sportfishing anglers caught some quality snapper and reef fish at the Cochrane Artificial Reef when the winds eased last weekend.
Lake Gregory is another hot spot that has not been affected by the flood waters. By all reports the bass are very active and responding to most lures used. A great way to start the day is to arrive at the dam around sun-up and fish surface lures for the first hour or so. There are many different surface lures on the market but the Cultiva Zippin’ Ziggy in the gold has been one of my favourites, and usually attracts the bigger bass. Once the day warms up, fish the edges and timber with spinnerbaits, blades and lightly weighted soft plastics.
Lake Mondruan has seen the water level rise and run over the spillway. Rob from the caravan park said that the water was still clean enough to fish and that he’s hooked a few barra in the main basin during the past week. Hopefully, not too many barra have escaped over the wall, but I guess only time will tell.
