Fish Report - 8th October 2009

Well, the last month was a fairly ordinary one for good weather in the Bundaberg area, but on the few good days that we did have, the offshore fishing was great.

We’re just coming off the end of the snapper run and the snapper were big  -  some to 80cm.  Other species were parrot, sweetlip, hussar and some big coral trout. For those who like to put down a live bait, there are still a few pelagics about.  Spanish mackerel, cobia and dolphin fish just to name a few.

The local inshore reefs (when we can get out to them) have been producing some school mackerel, big grunter and the odd sweetlip.

The river mouths are producing some great fishing.  Small schools of queenfish and trevally have been harassing bait schools and the lure fishermen have been having a ball.  Small poppers, chromies and plastics are the favourite lures.

The sand flats and rock walls have been producing some good flathead and bream, and a few jack and fingermark have also been caught.

Up the Burnett River, the grunter are making their mark, and some good sized fish have been taken.  Please be aware of the new grunter size limits.  Whiting have been patchy but fishing around the full moon has produced some top quality fish.

The local dams have been producing some hot barra and bass fishing.  The bass at the Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) have been patrolling the weed edges so spinnerbaits and surface poppers have been fishing well.

The Barra up at Monduran have been very active.  Fishing the flats and weed edges by slow rolling soft plastics and using shallow diving hard bodies have been the best methods.  The main basin of the dam has produced some excellent barra fishing and trolling has been doing really well.  Diving Minnows that dive to 15-20 feet will give the best results.

Please remember, you must have a Stocked Impoundment Permit to fish both Lake Gregory and Lake Monduran.

Till next time,

Tim Mulhall
