on orders over $125Wasn’t it great to see some decent weather fall over a weekend? And at this stage, this weekend is shaping up to be another cracker for the Bundaberg area.
By the amount of large boat trailers at the Burnett Heads boat ramp last Saturday morning, it looked like everyone was out making the most of the good conditions. By all reports most of the reefs off Bundy produced some nice fish including heaps of hussar and parrot, with a few snapper, sweetlip and cod mixed in.
Just offshore areas like the Cochrane Artificial, and the Two and Four Mile reefs were all worth fishing with some quality snapper were caught at first light in the morning and at dusk into the dark.
The Burnett River was also very busy over the weekend. Probably the most common species caught were flathead, bream, whiting and still a few blue salmon and tailor mixed in to produce a bit more excitement.
The flathead have been really active and responding well to soft plastics cast around the sand bars and creek mouths. Some of the hot plastics have been the 120 Squidgie Wriggler in any colour, the 4” Swimming Mullet from Gulp and the Fuze 85mm soft plastic called The Doctor. Rigging these on a jig head just heavy enough to bounce along the bottom should do the trick. Some of the bigger bream in the Burnett have also come from this same technique.
The blue salmon are still around in good numbers throughout the town reach. Try casting metal vibes around 80mm worked close to the bottom or try bait-fishing with strips of mullet fillet. This has also been doing the damage.
We’ve also heard a few reports of a few quality winter whiting in the leads at Burnett Heads on both fresh yabbies and squid baits.
On the fresh water scene, Lake Gregory is really fishing well. I got a chance to get out there at daylight last Sunday and had a ball targeting the bass on surface lures with the Cultiva Zip ‘n’ Ziggy being a personal favourite. Once the day warmed up I tried casting small soft plastics around the weed edges and landed another few bass. If you intend doing a trip to Lake Gregory just keep in mind that the water levels are probably the lowest I’ve seen and getting the boat on and off the trailer was a bit of a mission.
