on orders over $125Well, the first week of 2016 has started off with a bang. By the sounds of it, most anglers were keen to get out on the water and all reports we’ve heard this past week suggest most people started 2016 in style, landing some really nice fish.
Wasn’t it great to see Bundaberg get some well-needed rainfall earlier this week? At this stage the forecast for the weekend doesn’t look too bad, but we will have to wait and see.
All the boats that ventured out to the reef from Burnett Heads and 1770 said they experienced some of the best reef fishing they have done in years. In most cases, people reached their bag limits, filling their ice-boxes with nice coral trout, red throat emperor, red emperor, and hussar, and a few massive Spanish mackerel were also boated.
Due to the recent rainfall, all our local rivers will be running fresh for the next week or so. We suggest you try fishing around the river mouths where the water should be cleaner.
Watch out for debris that may have washed into the river, and play it safe on the water. The fresh should stir up the mud crabs, so as things start to settle it will be worth dusting off the pots to try to catch a few muddies.
Last weekend I went up to Lake Monduran and managed to land a 91.5cm barra on Saturday morning, casting to the standing timber using a Jackall Squirrel. This was one of six barra that I saw hooked early that morning.
If you are planning a trip to Lake Monduran I suggest fishing a little heavier than you would normally. I’m using 50lb braid and 70lb leader, as the barra are averaging around 80cm to 100cm and it’s beginning to get like the good old days where it was a 50/50 chance of landing the barramundi when fishing around the timber.
