The rain we have received recently in the local Bundaberg area should improve the fishing enormously.
We’ve had the odd few days of calm weather and this has allowed a lot of boats to head offshore with most heading out from Burnett Heads to the northern areas as well as the gutters.
The northern areas produced some good mixed bags of hussar, parrot, red emperor and sweetlip, while the gutters produced some excellent fishing with some big grass sweetlip, parrot, cod, coral trout and big red emperor.
Some of the inshore reefs out to about nine mile also produced some great fishing with some good sized sweetlip, stripeys and squire.
There are also some good numbers of mackerel about, big school and Spanish. Trolling lures and gar will score you a mackerel.
The mouths of the local rivers have been fishing really well as the fresh from the rain coming down the rivers has pushed the fish down, with trevally and queenfish smashing up the bait schools.
Plenty of flathead have been caught and whiting have made their presence felt, and using yabbies and worms as bait should land you some of these.
The deeper holes and rock bars have been producing big jacks and fingermark. Using live baits is the way to go.
The local dams have been a bit tough to fish as the rain has raised the water levels in most of the dams and the new clean cold rise will make it tough. The fish that have been caught have been in shallower water – that is, 10 to 15 feet as these areas are warmer than anywhere else.
The Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) has seen a few bass caught around the shallow weeded areas on spinnerbaits.
Lake Monduran has produced some big barra in the main basin as they will all be heading down towards the dam wall because their natural instinct will be telling them to head to the salt water to spawn. Casting around the points entering into the bays has produced some good barra with soft plastics being hot favourites.
