How good was the weather around the Bundaberg area over the break? It had to be some of the best weather we have had all year.
The mint weather conditions allowed a lot of boats to head offshore. Although the sharks took a lot of the quality fish, there were still some great catches. Good quality catches of coral trout, red throat sweetlip, red jew, parrot and some monster hussar all filled the ice boxes. Some big cobia and Spanish mackerel were also caught by those who floated out big dead fish.
Some of the smaller boats that got out to the inshore reefs also scored well with plenty of school mackerel and a few big golden trevally. A few sweetlip and some big grunter were also caught inshore.
Most of the rivers and creeks are really starting to fire, with good numbers of big mangrove jack now being caught. Live baiting the deeper holes with sprats or poddy mullet has been the go for the jacks.
There are plenty of other species also being caught, including grunter, flathead and some cracker bream.
There seems to be a big run of dart along the coastal beaches with the tops of the tides being the favoured times to have a crack at the dart.
A few mud crabs are on the move and are well worth the effort of putting in the pots.
The bass in Lake Gregory are biting well, with most being caught on surface lures early in the morning.
Lake Monduran is producing a few barra and last week’s northerly winds got them really fired up, and made them a lot easier to catch. Again, small diving hard body lures have been working best.
