The fishing in the Bundaberg area has been hot over the past week again – and the Burnett River has been no exception! The trophy sized mangrove jacks are still on the chew! Slow-rolling Lucky Craft Pointers across the rock bars has been the standout technique. There’s also been some outstanding sized bream being caught. They are being caught on 2.5” Zman Grubz with a lightly weighted jighead, and the kids have been smashing them on small baits on the tops and bottoms of the tides. With the new moon tides this weekend, the mud crabs should be ON again so make sure you make the most out of that! There’s also been rumours of the prawns showing up, so don’t forget your cast net if you go on the water. Low tide is always best.
BAFFLE CREEK AND KOLAN RIVER
Both the Baffle and the Kolan systems are still fishing very well, with the mangrove jack still the standout fish. They seem to be eating smaller bait fish so your 3” Zman Minnowz is the plastic to use! Slow-rolling these plastics is a deadly way to have a cracker of a jack session. With the new moon, the summer whiting should be in awesome numbers. Fishing with fresh yabbies and beach worms is by far the most effective way to target them. There’s also been plenty of queenfish chopping up at the mouth so throwing medium sized Halco Poppers around the bait could get exciting! Definitely don’t forget about throwing in the crab pots because there’s been plenty of reports of nice chocolate mud crabs coming out of these systems!
ELLIOTT RIVER
The Elliott should be fishing awesome this weekend for summer whiting. The afternoon incoming tide looks good to me. With the smaller afternoon tides I’d be fishing with a lightly weighted sinker with fresh yabbies on a Mustad size 6 longshank hook. The jacks should be firing up the backs of the creeks too. Using small sized hard body lures and soft plastics will be the go. Fishing with livies on the change of the tides will be well worth a go as well. Don’t forget to take your cast net down because you never know when those prawns will show up in the mouths of all the small creeks.
LAKE MONDURAN
Lake Monduran surely is the place to be at the moment!! I was lucky enough to fish there last weekend. The standout lures for Timmy and I were your Jackal Squirrels and Lucky Craft pointers. We pulled barra out of every area we fished. The standout technique was throwing your lure hard against the timber/weed and giving it a couple aggressive twitches, then giving it a very long pause. Of course, fishing the bays and points into which the wind is blowing is a great place to start. Getting on the water early for the first light bite will improve your chances a lot as well.
