on orders over $125With the warmer weather upon us the fishing action around the Bundaberg area is starting to heat up. All the local river and estuary systems will have plenty to offer in the coming weeks. The offshore reefs are also producing, providing the winds are favourable.
The Burnett River is producing good runs of salmon in the upper town reaches. Bream are now in small numbers but you can still get some decent sized ones in the early hours around the rock/pylon structures.
The school mackerel have been showing up around the coast from Burnett Heads down to the Two Mile and the Four Mile patches, including the artificial reefs. Best tactics are throwing metal spoons/slugs at them, or anchor up, produce some berley and float a pilchard out on a ganged hook set-up. School mackerel are great fun on light gear and are an excellent table fish when they are fresh.
The Baffle Creek is producing good mangrove jacks on the Bomber-stye lures, but reports of big jacks being caught on flesh baits are popular as well.
Flathead are everywhere, especially hanging around drop-offs and ledges. Target them with a variety of soft plastics. Flathead love them like lollies. Be sure to put plenty of work into twitching them up off the bottom.
The Elliott River system is an excellent place to catch good numbers of tasty whiting. A run-in tide is the best as the fish move back onto the previously exposed sand banks looking for food. Whiting can be caught in the very shallowest of water, especially big 30cm plus fish. The same can be said with larger than average flathead. Coming up to the full moon, nights will produce good numbers and sizes as they don’t feel as threatened compared to daytime feeding on the sand flats. The humble prawn will work every time.
