on orders over $125It’s all systems go for estuary fishing around Bundaberg this weekend. The Burnett River has recovered and is firing!
There are all number of species on the go at the moment. If you can get some live bait, that will be your ticket to catching some quality fish. King salmon, jewfish, flathead and bream just love live baits.
Good reports of all species have been coming in. The best times are of course early mornings and late evenings under the bridges in the Burnett. Be prepared to sit patiently with the live baits and get ready for action.
Skyringville has also been producing good quality king salmon, flathead and good-sized grunter. Be aware that this system has changed because of the Jan/Feb floods and is shallow more than usual in parts.
The Elliott River continues to produce fish, but the increasing popularity of this system means that you need to fish at certain times to guarantee a feed of tasty whiting and flathead. I stress that a run-in tide is a must, and preferably a bit of dirty water as well. Being so clear at the moment the fish will be in the upper reaches of the river system. Try to go on an overcast day to increase your chances as well. Small yabbies, prawns and sandworms will do the trick. As I primarily chase these two species, I know where and when you will find them.
The offshore fishing has also been great as well as we have finally had a good run of calm winter days to chase the reef dwellers. Good tides and a full moon approaching will produce good catches of red emperor, coral trout and other species. The best way to catch coral trout is on the drift over bommies and good structure with either fresh baits or octopus-style jigs.
The freshwater scene is good also for a fish. Barramundi are still being caught at Lake Monduran on suspending lures early in the morning or late afternoon on the edges of the banks with soft plastics.
Bass have slowed up considerably at most impoundments, but some are still to be found around the weedy edges on small suspending lures. Best fishing is early morning on surface action lures.
Important reminder – keep only what you need and release the others for another day.
