Finally we have had a run of good weather around the local Bundaberg area, but unfortunately for the reef fishermen, we can’t do much due to the Coral Reef Fin Fish closure. This a 5-day closure finishing on the 9th October this year to allow most of the reef fish to spawn for future seasons. There will be another 5-day closure about the same time next month from 3rd to 7th November inclusive.
Because of the closure, most of the fishing has been done in the local dams and rivers lately. The Burnett River has been producing some great fish. The top reaches of the river are still a bit fresh, but this hasn’t stopped the bream being caught on Blade lures. Further towards the mouth of the river the water is a bit cleaner and there have been reported some catches of big flathead and grunter being taken on soft plastics.
The river mouth is also producing some excellent mackerel fishing with even some good catches of mackerel being caught off the rocks. High speed spinning with chrome lures such as Flasha lures and Instinct Predator Vide lures or even pillies rigged on ganged hooks should land a nice feed. If you have a boat, trolling 4-5 inch chrome diving lures has been producing the goods.
Don’t forget, this weekend on the 9th and 10th October, is the Win Television Monduran Family Fishing Classic, held at Lake Monduran near Gin Gin. There are heaps of lucky draw prizes with the major prize being a boat, motor and trailer package worth $8,500 from Adrians Marine Centre. You can register to enter the competition from Friday at the Monduran Anglers and Stocking Association office at the Lake Monduran Recreation Park. There is plenty of camping available and it is a great family weekend.
Till next time,
