Fish Report - 20th January 2011

Well, the heavy rain in the Bundaberg area has stopped for now and the river flow has slowed right down. With the bigger tides at the moment, this should see some salt starting to push back up the rivers underneath the fresh.

The fishing has been improving and will only get better if we don’t get any more rain. The rocky areas around the local river mouths have been producing some good quality fish including big bream, cod and the odd jew, by fishing with mullet fillets as bait.

The beaches are also fishing well for whiting and flathead. Worms have been the best for the whiting, and whitebait for the flathead.

Further up the Burnett River there has been the odd jack but the catfish seem to be giving most a hard time.

The inshore reefs have been producing some excellent fishing for snapper, sweetlip, grunter and spanish mackerel.

The outer reefs and islands are producing some excellent fishing also. Big reds and coral trout have been plentiful. Livies of big flesh baits have been best, and plenty of tuskfish, sweetlip, cod and hussar have all been caught as well.

Lake Monduran has been slow as it is still overflowing. The barra that have been caught have come from the main basin. Some barra to 120cm have been caught with soft plastics such as Slickrigs and Hollowbellies.

The Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) is producing some nice bass to 52cm. Late afternoon sessions have been a favourite. Using surface lures has produced the big bass and the most fun. During the day, the weed edges have produced some good bass also by slow rolling small diving minnows such as the new Strada range and the little Berkley Fat Dogs.

Hopefully the rain will stay away for the rest of summer and the fishing will continue to improve.

Till next time,
Tim Mulhall
