on orders over $125With moderate south-easterly winds and a few showers forecast for the Bundaberg area this weekend, I would suggest fishing the local estuaries and impoundments. Both have been fishing very well during the past week.
Not many bigger boats had the chance to wet a line due to the weather, but the few that had a go reported that there are still a few mackerel around, all the way from 1770 to Woodgate on the close inshore reefs.
I had a chance to fish the Burnett River last weekend and caught a couple of trumpeter and flathead on 4” Gulp soft plastics. If was good fun until I found a school of small sea toad which destroyed a packet of plastics in no time at all.
It still seems that the anglers who spend the time at night in the Burnett are catching the better class of fish. Reports of grunter up to 55cm, threadfin salmon and barramundi up to and over the magic metre are anywhere in this system from the port up to the town reach structures. Live-baiting with prawns or poddy mullet has been the most effective.
The Isis Impoundment (Lake Gregory) remains one of Queensland’s most reliable bass fisheries. The bass in the lake can be caught using many different techniques. I normally try for an early surface session with the Zip ‘N’ Ziggy “walk the dog” style lure being one of my favourites. As the day heats up, try lipless crank baits – Jackall TN60 – or spinnerbaits around the edges and standing timber in the southern part of this top little dam. There have been the occasional reports of saratoga being caught or seen lately. The stocking association released fifty saratoga only about a month ago, so hopefully these fish will mature and breed to make great sport fishing for years to come.
The Kolan River in both salt and fresh water has seen barra being caught from down near the mouth right up towards Lake Monduran. All sizes of lures seem to be working. Trolling 3-5cm diving lures towards the mouth has been effective whilst the smaller suspending lures are ideal for casting to any good-looking snags. Lures such as Jackall Squirrels in 79mm and 100mm have been stand-outs.
