Burnett Heads

Burnett Heads and the surrounding waters offers some of the most diverse fishing in the local area for all forms of fishing, whether you're just fishing from the bank, a kayak, tinny or in a bigger boat heading out to the outer reefs and beyond.

Fishing from the rocks and beaches or from a smaller boat/kayak around the heads and the port, you would be expected to catch the bread and butter species of bream, flathead, whiting and cod. Through the seasons though you may chance across other species like threadfin salmon, fingermark, mangrove jack, mulloway, mackeral (school, grey, spotted and spanish), tuna, bonito, grass sweetlip, squire, winter whiting, golden trevally, GTs, turrum, tailor, barramundi, prawns, crabs (mud and sand) and gar.

The main boat ramp in the Burnett Heads Marina is a four-lane concrete ramp and has plenty of parking. Reefs offshore start as close as a few miles out with Ryan's Rock, a seasonal haunt for all mackeral species, bonito, tuna (mack and longtail), squire, sweetlip and is a good spot to pick up live baits.

Further out are spots like the Two Mile, the Stepping Stones, the Barjon, Evans Patch, the Plane Wreck (Beaufort Bomber), the Nursery, the Kolan Patch, the Fifteen Mile and so on. The list of species caught increases as you travel further out, but the main targets are red emporer, coral trout, sweetlip (grass and red throat), parrot, red jew, spanish and black king.

We are extremely lucky that we are in a cross-over area between southern and northern species. With some local advice and a bit of good timing you can have days were you can jig up amberjacks, yellowtail king, black king and coral trout, all in the same spot. Maybe land a sailfish in the morning and hapuka a few hours later, or land a quality snapper and have a red jew on the next drop.
