Burrum River System including the Gregory, Isis and Cherwell Rivers and Theodolite Creek

The Burrum River System is huge, encompassing the catchment rivers of the Gregory River, the Cherwell River, the Isis River and many smaller feeder creeks along the way.
It provides the all the main species of bream, black bream, whiting, estuary cod, flathead and mud crabs all year, and seasonal catches of trumpeter, mangrove jack, threadfin, barramundi, tailor, dart, golden trevally, GTs, tarpon and prawns. Around the lower reaches it is not uncommon to see shoals of pelagics on the high tide moving in to feed on bait schools. Tuna, mackeral, queenfish and big GTs have been caught up to the islands past Walkers Point. For those anglers who dedicate their time to barra and learn the tides where they are present, the Burrum and it's tributaries can offer some big native fish, however not in big numbers.
During winter and calmer summer periods, the massive sand flats of the mouth offer miles of clear water that lend themselves well to sight-casting for queenfish and trevally. Further out is the Burrum 8-Mile Reef that attracts seasonal spotted, school, grey and spanish mackeral, northern blue and mack tuna, grass sweetlip and some nice autum/winter snapper.
The main access from the Bundaberg side is at Walkers Point via Woodgate, while the main southern access is from Burrum Heads. Other boat ramps are at Buxton and Howard. There is a popular camping spot at North Shore (Burrum Point) and a camping permit is required as it is in the Burrum Coast National Park.

Theodolite Creek is a small shallow sandy creek but is well worth a cast. Access is best suited to small boats and definitely those fishing from kayaks. The main species are whiting, flathead, bream, estuary cod and mud crabs. Seasonally mangrove jacks, small barra, and occasional trumpeter can be caught.

Both Woodgate Beach and Palm Beach hold whiting and flathead most of the year and seasonally dart and trevally. There are no well formed gutters due to the lack of big surf so most beach fishing is spread evenly.

Both Woodgate and Burrum Heads have plenty of accomodation from units to caravan parks.
