The Buxton Flathead Competition is a proudly local three-round tournament that brings families, recreational anglers and the wider community together for a relaxed but exciting series of full-day fishing events. Hosted by Buxton Bush Camp, each round is held on a Saturday from 5:30am to 3:30pm, giving competitors plenty of time to work the productive waters of the Isis, Gregory and surrounding creek systems. Dates for the 2026 series are still to be confirmed.
To be eligible to compete, all entrants must stay at Buxton Bush Camp on the Friday night prior to each round, creating a great social atmosphere and bringing everyone together before the day’s fishing begins.
The competition includes Junior and Senior categories, along with dedicated Lure and Bait divisions to suit different fishing styles and preferences. Across the three rounds, anglers can also chase one of the event’s most respected titles: King and Queen of the Burrum - awarded to the male and female competitors with the longest overall bag of five flathead accumulated across all rounds.
While anglers may keep any legal catch, the event encourages a simple catch-and-release approach to help maintain healthy flathead numbers. With prizes, points tallies, presentations and a friendly, community-driven vibe, the Buxton Flathead Competition is a standout annual event for anyone who loves estuary fishing and a great weekend away.
