Queensland Fishing Rules & Regulations
Understanding and following Queensland’s fishing and boating rules is vital, not only to protect our fish stocks and waterways, but also to keep everyone safe on the water. These rules cover everything from size and possession limits to closed seasons, marine park zones, boating requirements, and permits for stocked impoundments. By staying informed and doing the right thing, you’re helping ensure healthy fisheries and safe, sustainable enjoyment for all anglers.
Each category below includes a brief summary and a direct link to the official Queensland Government page for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Size & Possession Limits (Tidal Waters)
Every tidal (saltwater) species in Queensland has specific size and possession limits designed to protect fish stocks and ensure sustainable fishing. Always measure your catch carefully and count your total possession (what you have in your boat, esky, or at home).
For the full and up-to-date list of size and possession limits for tidal species, visit the official QLD Government website via the link below:

Size & Possession Limits (Freshwater)
Freshwater species in Queensland have specific size and possession limits to help protect and sustain our inland fisheries. These limits can change from time to time, so always check the most up-to-date information before heading out. Great Sandy Marine Park Zoning Plan
The Great Sandy Marine Park extends from Baffle Creek in the north to Double Island Point in the south, covering areas such as Hervey Bay, K’gari (Fraser Island), Burrum Heads, and nearby coastal waters. The park is divided into zones that regulate what activities are allowed, including fishing, crabbing, and boating, to protect sensitive habitats and marine life.
Make sure you’re familiar with the green (no-take) and yellow (limited-take) zones before heading out, as significant penalties apply for fishing or anchoring in restricted areas.

Bunker Group Zoning Plan
The Capricorn Bunker Group includes popular offshore reef areas such as Lady Musgrave, Lady Elliott, Fitzroy, Boult & Lamont Reefs. This area forms part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is managed under a zoning plan that outlines where activities like fishing, diving, and anchoring are permitted.
Before heading offshore, make sure you’re aware of the zone boundaries and any restrictions in place. For detailed maps and the full zoning plan, download the PDF link below:
