Big Cat Reality

Big Cat Reality is a 25-metre live-aboard charter vessel operated by Reality Fishing Charters out of Burnett Heads, Bundaberg. It’s purpose-built for serious long-range reef and sports-fishing adventures, comfortably accommodating up to 21 guests with air-conditioned bunk cabins, spacious dining/lounge areas, multiple showers, and heaps of deck space. The boat carries seven dedicated 4.3m fishing tenders, giving anglers the flexibility to fish smaller reefs, bommies and shoals each morning and afternoon before returning to the mother ship.

Big Cat Charters Offered:

  • 7-Day Swains Reef Line Fishing Adventures – their most popular trip targeting remote reef systems with very little pressure.
  • 9-Day Coral Sea Sports Fishing Expeditions – heading to ultra-remote locations like Cato Reef, Wreck Reef, Kenn Reef and other Coral Sea atolls.
  • 3-Day Bunker Group Trips – shorter, action-packed local reef adventures for anglers wanting a taste of the Big Cat experience.

Gear Requirements – BYO:
Big Cat Reality is strictly bring your own fishing gear. Anglers bring their own rods, reels, tackle, terminal gear, jigs, soft plastics and any specialised setups they prefer. This is a major part of why Big Cat trips appeal to serious anglers - everyone sets up exactly how they want, from heavy jigging outfits to bottom bashing combos. The crew provide tender fuel, bait storage and all fish-handling, but all gear is fully BYO.

Species You Can Expect to Catch:
The fishing varies from classic reef bottom-bashing to high-energy sportfishing. Common catches include coral trout, red throat emperor, red emperor, spangled emperor, tusk fish, job fish, cobia, hussar and other classic reef staples. On Coral Sea trips, anglers often encounter giant trevally, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tuna, spanish mackerel and other pelagic species. The tender setup allows you to chase whatever suits the conditions - jigging, trolling, bottom fishing, casting or topwater.

On-Board Food & Amenities:
One of the biggest highlights of a Big Cat Reality trip is the onboard catering. A qualified chef prepares cooked breakfasts, hearty lunches, fresh snacks and afternoon tea, and delicious nightly dinners—plus a themed Seafood Night during the trip. Meals are generous, varied and designed to keep you fuelled for big days on the water. The boat is fully licensed with a bar-tab system, and guests can relax in air-conditioned comfort between sessions, enjoy dessert after dinner, or unwind on the deck as the boat steams to the next location.

The Overall Experience:
A trip on Big Cat Reality is a full immersion into remote reef fishing. You fish sunrise to sunset if you want, sleep in comfort, eat like a king, and explore reef systems that most people will never see. The crew take care of everything—cleaning, filleting and cryo-vac sealing your catch; running tenders; keeping everyone safe; and ensuring the trip runs smoothly. For many anglers it’s a bucket-list live-aboard experience combining adventure, good company, serious fishing and great food.

Their two main reef trips - a full-day and a half-day option - are designed to give anglers access to quality local reef systems with a personalised, hands-on experience. The boat typically carries a maximum of around six anglers, meaning plenty of space, one-on-one guidance, and a relaxed atmosphere compared to large multi-party charters.

Full-Day Reef Charter:
This is a roughly 10-hour offshore mission targeting prime Bundaberg reef species. Depending on weather and conditions, the crew may travel anywhere from the closer inshore and mid-shelf grounds right out to the wider reefs up to 50 nautical miles offshore. Anglers commonly chase coral trout, red emperor, sweetlip, tusk fish, hussar and other classic reef staples. All rods, reels, bait and tackle are provided, and the crew offer help with techniques, rigging and fish handling throughout the day. Bottled water and soft drinks are supplied, and guests can bring their own lunch and snacks. It’s a full day on the water built for anglers who want quality fishing and personalised service without a big-boat vibe.

Half-Day Reef Charter:
The half-day option is a shorter 4–5 hour trip designed for those wanting a taste of reef fishing without committing to a long offshore run. These trips usually stay closer to shore, focusing on productive shallow reefs, rubble patches and nearby artificial wrecks. Anglers can still expect a mix of reef species like those mentioned in the full day charters. All gear, bait and tackle are supplied, making it a great choice for families, beginners, visitors passing through Bundy, or anyone wanting a lighter offshore session.

Overall Experience:
Both reef trips offer a friendly, down-to-earth, small-group environment run by an experienced skipper who knows the Bundaberg reef systems intimately. With all tackle provided, no bar crossing to worry about, and a focus on customer experience, Truansea Charters delivers a relaxed but productive day chasing quality reef fish in the waters just off Bundaberg.
