The Catch a Catty Family Fishing Competition is a long-running freshwater event held at Mingo Crossing Caravan and Recreation Park on the Burnett River. Run by the volunteers of the Paradise Fish Stocking Association, it brings families, campers and dedicated freshwater anglers together for a relaxed weekend of fishing, fun and community spirit.
Held annually in August, the competition turns quiet Mingo Crossing into a lively fishing village. While the main focus is on catfish, the event also includes categories for yellowbelly (golden perch), silver perch, Australian bass, spangled perch, sleepy cod, and even a sought-after barramundi section.
The weekend usually begins with Friday afternoon nominations and a briefing, followed by full days of fishing on Saturday and Sunday, with rolling weigh-ins to keep the excitement going. Prizes cover junior and senior divisions, major lucky draws, champion angler awards and plenty of giveaways for kids, making it a genuine family-friendly competition.
Mingo Crossing provides the perfect setting, offering powered and unpowered sites, a kiosk, barbecues, amenities and a quality boat ramp with direct access to the river. Proceeds from the event support ongoing fish-stocking efforts in the Burnett system, helping maintain healthy populations of barramundi, golden perch and bass for future years.
